Muslims living and working in the
western Johnson County,
Kansas have been meeting at
the Lenexa Community Center since 2001 to offer Juma'h prayers. During Ramadan many
performed Taraweeh prayers at various mosques in the metro area, all of which are
distant, making it very inconvenient to join Taraweeh on a regular basis. To
alleviate the difficulty and encourage more families residing in western Johnson
County to participate, the group organized the first Taraweeh prayer at a convenient
location nearby in the year August, 2009.
Since then the group has been meeting regularly to discuss a permanent solution to fulfill the needs of Muslims residing in western Johnson County for daily and Friday prayers, Islamic education, and related activities. Thus was established the Shawnee Mission Islamic Education Center (SMIEC), a non-profit religious organization that was incorporated in the State of Kansas in February, 2010; and received the IRS non-profit religious organization status in May, 2011.
SMIEC will serve as a central resource for meeting the religious and educational needs of Muslims residing in the western Johnson County, Kansas and neighboring communities.
